Abstract

Asian Americans represent 7.2% of the U.S. population yet account for less than 0.4% of all drafted NBA players, a stark disparity highlighted by the career of Jeremy Lin. While his "Linsanity" period demonstrated the potential for success, it also exposed the pervasive stereotypes and prejudices affecting this demographic. This paper investigates the root causes of this underrepresentation by reviewing social scientific perspectives on the experiences of Asian Americans in basketball. It first defines stereotypes and prejudice, then analyzes how specific tropes, particularly the "model minority" myth, are applied within athletic contexts. These stereotypes often frame Asian Americans as intelligent and diligent but inherently less athletic, charismatic, or suited for leadership roles on the court. This perception directly impacts recruitment, evaluation, and opportunity. Furthermore, the paper examines the psychological ramifications for players, focusing on "stereotype threat", the phenomenon where anxiety about confirming negative stereotypes impairs performance. This pressure contributes to significant mental health challenges, including chronic self-doubt and identity conflict, which are often exacerbated by cultural expectations and a lack of institutional support. Finally, I propose actionable strategies to dismantle these barriers, including equitable evaluation protocols for coaches, increased media representation of diverse athletes, and mentorship programs. Creating a more inclusive environment is not only a matter of equity but is essential for allowing talent to thrive regardless of racial background, ultimately enriching the sport of basketball.
