A Biostatistical Evaluation of Recent Smoked Tobacco Usage on Serum Triglyceride Levels and Cardiovascular Risk Indicators in Adults and Adolescents.

Using data from NHANES, this study analyses the relationship between recent smoked-tobacco use and serum triglyceride levels in adults and adolescents. The independent variable was recent smoked-tobacco use, and this data is collected from a CDC questionnaire. The dependent variable of this data is the triglyceride levels in the participants. Every participant had a sequence number (SEQN) and using that number, the questionnaire dataset and the participant triglyceride level dataset was merged using Jamovi software. The final sample contained 3,055 participants, with 420 recent smoked-tobacco users and 2,635 participants who did not report smoked-tobacco use within the past five days. The study resulted in smoked-tobacco users had a higher average triglyceride level than non-users, with recent smoked-tobacco users having a triglyceride level of 138 mg/dL compared to non-users having a triglyceride level of 113 mg/dL. The statistical significance of this analyses was proven using a Welch's t-test and it resulted in a p-value of less than 0.001. The results of this study included that on average, recent smoked-tobacco users have higher triglyceride levels.
