The Moderating Role of Personal Autonomy in the Relationship Between Depression and Internet Gaming Disorder

Abstract

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is a condition characterized by a strong urge to play online games, which can lead to interference with daily responsibilities and relationships. Previous research has found a strong correlation between depression and IGD, especially among adolescents. Depression may increase the risk of developing IGD, while severe gaming may also worsen depressive symptoms through social isolation, sleep problems, and difficulty in emotional regulation. However, the factors that affect this particular relationship are still not fully understood.

This review examines personal autonomy as a possible moderator between depression and IGD severity. Personal autonomy refers to a person’s ability to make independent choices and act based on personal desires instead of feeling controlled or pressured by others. This need is especially important during adolescence, when young people are developing independence while still dealing with family, school, and social expectations. Research suggests that low autonomy is related to higher levels of depression and more severe IGD symptoms. At the same time, cultural differences, including different levels of parental involvement, may influence how levels of autonomy are experienced and understood.

Overall, existing literature supports the idea that personal autonomy is connected to both depression and IGD. However, few studies have directly tested whether autonomy changes the strength of the relationship between these conditions. Future research should use reliable measures, such as the Autonomy Scale Amsterdam (ASA), to examine this possible moderating effect. Understanding the role of autonomy could help researchers and clinicians create more targeted interventions for adolescents experiencing depression and problematic gaming.
