Conventional submarines face a fundamental engineering trade-off between submerged endurance, acoustic and thermal discretion, propulsion power, safety, cost, and platform integration. No single energy or propulsion technology simultaneously maximizes all of these parameters. This paper evaluates five technological pathways relevant to the future of the Indian Navy: nuclear propulsion, air-independent propulsion (AIP), lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, AIP–LFP hybrid systems, and emerging lithium titanate/solid-state battery architectures.
Particular attention was given to the interaction between propulsion and energy-storage systems, since changes in one subsystem can impose constraints on weight distribution, cooling, internal volume, maintenance, and platform architecture.
The analysis indicates that the principal challenge is not selecting a universally superior technology, but optimizing complementary technologies around distinct operational requirements. Nuclear propulsion provides exceptional endurance and sustained power but introduces substantial cost, infrastructure, safety, and acoustic-management requirements.
For India, the findings suggest that future submarine development should prioritize indigenous, modular energy architectures that balance endurance, power, safety, lifecycle cost, and technological sovereignty rather than pursuing a single propulsion solution. The study ultimately frames submarine energy design as a multi-objective optimization problem in which operational effectiveness is determined by system-level integration rather than any individual technology.
