In an era where data-driven communication is paramount, the accessibility of data visualizations to diverse audiences, including those with color vision deficiency (CVD), is of increasing importance. This research explores the intricate relationship between color choice and data visualization accessibility, with a primary focus on red-green colorblindness—affecting a significant percentage of the population. Through a mixed-methods approach encompassing experiments, simulations, and surveys, we validate the challenges posed by red-green combinations for individuals with CVD and extend our inquiry to include other problematic color combinations. Additionally, we investigate the effectiveness of colorblind-friendly palettes, variations in color values, and alternative data distinction methods. The findings underscore the critical role of color choice in ensuring inclusivity in data communication, offering practical insights for designers, practitioners, and developers seeking to create more accessible and inclusive data visualizations.
