Abstract

This paper explores the economic symbolism embedded within national flags, a dimension often overlooked in vexillological studies. While flags are widely recognized as political and cultural emblems, the article argues that they also function as visual representations of economic ideologies, histories, and ambitions. The analysis spans from communist regimes, such as the USSR, China, and North Korea, where flags explicitly display class-based and revolutionary economic themes, to non-communist nations like South Korea and Cambodia, where symbolism reflects innovation, tradition, and sector-specific economic reliance (e.g., tourism). The paper also highlights the legacy of maritime empires like Spain and Portugal, whose flags symbolize historical economic power through colonial exploration. Additionally, it examines how color choices in flag design—such as red for revolution, purple for luxury, and blue for loyalty—carry historical economic implications based on availability, cost, and symbolic utility. Ultimately, the study reveals how flags visually encode national economic narratives and serve as enduring symbols of identity, ideology, and transformation.
